In the dynamic realm of hip hop, where beats are the lifeblood, a few names resonate with the power to move a generation. Among them stands Mike WiLL Made-It, not just a beatmaker, but a true trendsetter.
Recently, however, the beat maestro took a step back from the limelight, focusing on the artists under his record label. But on a sunny day in May, he decided it was time to drop a different kind of beat – a beat of truth on X (formerly Twitter).
Mike WiLL Made-It’s message was clear and resonant: He’s calling for a revival of originality in music. His critique came in two parts:
He expressed his exhaustion with the trend of remaking iconic songs, stating, “Tired of these remakes. Nothing beats originality.”
He pointed out the trend of OG artists featuring on remakes of their own classics, urging, “Please, don’t feature on your classic
sick of hearing remakes , nothing like original shxt .

While he didn’t call out any artists directly, he hinted at recent instances like Usher featuring on Summer Walker’s “Come Thru,” which sampled his ’97 hit “You Make Me Wanna…”. Or Fergie joining Jack Harlow on stage at the VMA’s, performing to the tune of “Glamorous” sampled in Harlow’s hit, “First Class.”
But Mike WiLL Made-It isn’t pointing fingers at the record labels. In his eyes, they’re just doing their job – moving units. The responsibility, he believes, lies with the artists and production companies.
“They just put the stuff on the shelf,” he noted, “It’s up to the production company or the independent artists to bring originality.”
