After more than two decades, Sailor Moon is set to return to Cartoon Network, now under the Adult Swim banner. This highly anticipated comeback will feature an uncensored version of the iconic anime, thanks to a new dub by Viz Media.

Adult Swim is introducing a new programming block called Toonami Rewind, set to debut on May 31. Announced on their official Facebook page, this two-hour block will showcase beloved classic shōnen anime series such as Dragon Ball Z Kai and Naruto. However, the star attraction of this lineup is undoubtedly the return of Sailor Moon.

For the first time, Sailor Moon will air uncensored with a brand-new English dub from Viz Media. This is a significant departure from the original English dub produced by DiC Entertainment and later by Cloverway, which aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block between 1998 and 2002.

The original dub was heavily edited to make it more suitable for children, altering character names, removing Japanese cultural references, and even cutting entire episodes.

Notably, LGBTQ+ storylines, such as the relationship between Sailor Neptune and Uranus, were modified from lovers to cousins.

Viz Media’s acquisition of the dubbing rights in 2014 marked a new era for Sailor Moon fans. According to Crunchyroll, Viz Media secured the rights to all 200 episodes, movies, and specials of the original series, as well as the reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal.

This comprehensive collection includes the elusive fifth season, Sailor Stars, which was never dubbed in English during the 90s due to licensing issues and the controversial depiction of the Sailor Starlights.

Sailor Moon’s return to the airwaves is highly anticipated by fans old and new. Starting May 31, viewers can catch the uncensored adventures of Sailor Moon on Adult Swim every Friday at 5 p.m. ET.

This revival promises to bring the beloved characters and stories back to life, uncut and true to the original Japanese vision.

And that’s Wassupr. For more compelling tales and the pulse of the culture, keep it locked right here.
