Ultra Rare ‘Space World’ GameCube Prototype Hits eBay with a $100k Price Tag

Gold Game Cube

The Nintendo GameCube, a beloved console nearing its 25th anniversary, continues to captivate fans with its unique history and rare collectibles. From the Panasonic Q, which could play DVDs, to special editions like the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red console, collectors are always on the hunt for extraordinary finds. But none may be rarer than the elusive ‘Space World’ GameCube prototype.

Originally unveiled at Nintendo’s Space World 2000 event, this prototype was used to showcase the GameCube during its debut. Long thought to be lost to time, one of these LED-equipped prototypes reemerged in 2023, thanks to Donny Fillerup of ConsoleVariations.

What Makes the ‘Space World’ GameCube Unique?

Unlike retail GameCubes, the ‘Space World’ prototype lacks functional hardware and serves as a display model. Its features include LED lights that mimic the appearance of being powered on, a semi-transparent logo on top that reveals the disc inside, and subtle design differences like altered vents. According to ConsoleVariations, there are over 20 distinct differences between this prototype and the final Japanese GameCube model.

A Nostalgic Treasure with a Hefty Price

Donny Fillerup has now listed this rare prototype on eBay with a staggering $100,000 price tag. In his listing, Fillerup explains that the proceeds will help fund a “gaming place” where visitors can relive their childhood memories.

However, the prototype is being sold without its unique controller, which also features a design distinct from the standard GameCube controller.

A History of Selling Rare Gaming Memorabilia

This isn’t Fillerup’s first venture into selling rare gaming items. In 2022, he successfully auctioned off the Golden Wii, a one-of-a-kind console originally gifted to the British Royal Family by THQ, for $36,000.

Will It Fetch the Asking Price?

While the $100,000 price tag might seem steep, Fillerup is open to offers, leaving room for negotiation. For collectors with deep pockets, this historically significant prototype could be the crown jewel of any gaming collection.

Would you pay six figures to own a piece of Nintendo history? For those who can afford it, the ‘Space World’ GameCube is a nostalgic treasure waiting to be claimed.
