A recent discovery in Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, has revealed six ancient canoes, one estimated to be around 5,200 years old, predating Egypt’s Great Pyramid by about 700 years.

Since 2021, a total of 16 dugout boats have been unearthed, all crafted from single tree trunks using fire and primitive tools. Radiocarbon dating indicates these canoes were made between 1300 AD and 3000 BC, suggesting a previously unknown civilization thrived in the Midwest, engaging in trade and spiritual practices.

The oldest canoe, linked to the ancestors of the Ho-Chunk tribe, highlights the advanced boat-making skills present in North America contemporaneously with ancient Egyptian civilization. The canoes, found 30 feet underwater, were strategically placed near natural paths, indicating the lake was a bustling hub for generations.

Only two of the canoes have been removed for preservation, including a 14-foot vessel about 3,000 years old, made from red and white oak. Researchers believe the builders may have manipulated trees to enhance their water resistance.

Archaeologist Tamara Thomsen emphasized the importance of piecing together historical narratives through archaeological findings and cultural knowledge. This discovery is significant for the Ho-Chunk tribe, reinforcing their ancestral connection to the region and its spiritual significance.
