Has the Black Church Became the Club with Red Wine on the Side

The line between the sanctuary and the VIP lounge has officially vanished. What used to be a place of solemnity and “Sunday Best” has been traded in for fog machines, laser lights, and a dress code that looks more like a red carpet than a revival.

The "Vibe" Over the Word

The modern mega-church has mastered the art of the atmosphere. As noted in the critique of recent church trends, you can walk into some of these buildings and not tell the difference between what you were doing in the streets on Saturday night and what’s happening on Sunday morning.

With Kirk Franklin tracks pumping and pastors literally descending from the ceiling on harnesses, the service has become a high-production “full experience of amazingness” that prioritizes creativity over the sacred.

Designer Faith: The "Red Wine" Aesthetic

The “red wine on the side” represents the luxury and “soft life” theology being served to the congregation. We see pastors justifying $1,200 “red-bottom” shoes and Christian Dior suits by claiming they are literally “walking in the blood”. It’s a sophisticated, expensive aesthetic that suggests God’s favor is measured by the brand on your back.

Perhaps the most jarring part of this “club” transformation is the loss of the “free” in salvation.

This is a stark departure from the traditional Black church of the ’80s and ’90s, where pastors lived in the community they served and provided counseling, jail ministry, and funerals regardless of a member’s financial status.

Today, the “club” church is often located in the heart of a poor community, while the pastor lives in a distant mansion, only visiting the neighborhood to collect the gate entry tithes.
