Jay-Z’s latest release is a nostalgic nod to his early days in hip-hop. The track “Na What, Na Who (Originator 99)” was originally featured on his 1999 album Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, and it includes contributions from fellow New York artist Amil and his mentor Jaz-O.
The vinyl edition, available on Jay-Z’s official website, features not only the classic track but also includes “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” from his acclaimed The Black Album and other tracks spanning his career from 1998 to 2013. This release is a treat for collectors and long-time fans who appreciate the physical format of music.
Jay-Z and Jaz-O’s relationship has been tumultuous over the years. In his 2010 memoir Decoded, Jay-Z reflects on their early friendship, stating, “I connected with an older kid who had a reputation as the best rapper in Marcy.” Their bond was built on shared experiences and mutual respect, but it soured in the early 2000s due to business disagreements.
Despite their history, this re-release signifies a reconciliation of sorts, allowing fans to appreciate their collective contributions to hip-hop.
